The rumors are true, Yamapi has a new drama!
Yamashita Tomohisa aka Yamapi has been announced to star in a TBS drama “Flowers for Algernon” (Algernon ni Hanataba wo) this April. The said drama is based from bestselling novel of US author Daniel Keyes about a man’s journey as he experience love, joy, loneliness, and distress after becoming a genius. Nojima Shinji (49,Platonic, Oniichan,Gacha) will take charge of the script for the Japanese version. Nojima has created a number of hit dramas and his unique “Nojima World” plus the modern version of “Flowers for Algernon” is a must-see.
Yamapi plays the role of Shiratori Sakuto, a mentally retarded 28 year old man with the mind of a 6 year old. After a successful experiment on a laboratory rat named Algernon, the same experiment and surgery was done to Shiratori that made him a genius. “I’ve never played this character and I want to surprise and shock everyone, in a good way,” Yamapi commented. Although, he says that he’s still trying to grasp his character, but he will work hard and not let himself be disconnected with this character until the end.
For his role, Yamapi visited a mentally disabled facility in Tokyo where he got to interact with its patients. “All people in the facilities were very pure; a 60 year-old grandma drew me a picture and she sparkles like a young girl.” He also watched movie adaptations of this classic novel, which includes: “Charly” (1968) and “Des fleurs pour Algernon ” (2000). Also, since he is studying English, he also read the original novel.
“Flowers for Algernon” will air on TBS this April at 10:00 PM.
Not sure about Yamapi’s character name, I suck at kanji. 😄 Anyway, Yamapi and Aiba will be playing heavy roles for spring dramas and I hope that it won’t flop.
